In the pre-dawn hours of Feb. 28, 2000, Frank Buschauer of South Barrington called 911 and asked for help.

He told the dispatcher his wife had been in the couple’s whirlpool bathtub and apparently had drowned, authorities said. Nearly two decades later, Buschauer, now 70, will stand trial, charged...
